Leadership Development

Today’s health care executives are faced with a complex and quickly evolving environment. While leading dynamic organizations is inherent for some people, for most, strong leadership skills are developed through training. For new or rising managers, having the leadership skills to manage and motivate teams, influence stakeholders and execute change is crucial for you to advance in your career and lead effectively in your health care organization.

Woven throughout the Vanderbilt Master of Management in Health Care, the Leadership Development Program gives you the head start you need in your management career. Our faculty are leading researchers and consultants on organizational design and leadership, offering you expert insight and instruction on leadership techniques. Our partnership with both Hogan Assessments and Korn/Ferry International gives you access to best-of-class diagnostic tools used by Fortune 500 companies. Through the Leadership Development Program, you gain the skills to advance from practitioner to executive, increasing your ability as a leader and your value to your organization.

Intentionally designed to “bookend” the Capstone Project, the leadership component allows you to benefit from three-stages of leadership development—assessment, application and reflection.

Access leadership tools used by Fortune 500 CEOs.

Your leadership development begins in week one of the MM Health Care program. Starting with an in-depth assessment of your personal leadership style, you will engage in Hogan Assessments and Korn/Ferry 360-Degree Feedback diagnostic tools to help you uncover your strengths and targeted areas for improvement. During the process, you will discover how you view yourself as a manager and how your peers and colleagues perceive your management style. You will be matched with an Executive Coach who will help you interpret your assessment data to best understand your strengths as well as your “derailers”—areas for improvement. Together, you will create your personalized leadership development action plan.

Put your action plan to work in Capstone and on the job.

Throughout the program, you will work on several teams, giving you the opportunities to work on your development plan. Here, you can apply new techniques and management approaches, receiving feedback from your peers and instructors, to help you stretch and grow in your management style. In the Capstone Project you will have to manage a project for an organization as a team, enabling you to build on your strengths and work on your challenge areas. Leveraging the learning from your coach and your assessment, you can take these techniques back to your job for real-time application of your new leadership skills.

Reflect on your growth as a leader to manage with confidence.

By the end of the MM Health Care program, you will have applied your new leadership skills in project teams and on your job, experienced real-time feedback from your peers and progressed in your areas for improvement. To wrap up the Capstone Project, you will reflect on your development plan and renewed leadership style. With the insight to understand characteristics of effective leaders and strategies that you can use to manage and motivate, you will think and act like an executive in your organization.

I have worked as a manager with fiscal responsibilities for many years, but I did not have formal training. I learned what I needed to know from other mentors within my organization and through my professional experience. While I am competent for my responsibilities, I felt only adequately qualified in my position. This was most evident in that I was not confident in communicating issues effectively. I entered this program hoping to become more effective.

The experience has provided me with a self-confidence I may have lacked before and helped me understand that you can be great at your job and still need help with class work. I think it has put a perspective on where I am in my field verses my classmates and that we all have strengths and weaknesses.
